As a JHP bride (or groom), you will be given a list of wonderful vendors and other important people like florists, hair stylists, (and more) in your Wedding Packet. Today's feature is Derek McEwan, a DJ, and a personal trainer, one of the many wonderful people I have on my recommendation list. Derek is a good ol' Saskatchewan man who has planted some roots here in Calgary. Previously training at 2110 Fitness, he now trains downtown at the Fifth Avenue Club. To learn more about his DJing career, take a read below. Contact Information is at the bottom!
What do you usually start with when preparing for a set or gig?
A great opening track that is appropriate for the venue. A song that will set the mood for the entire night!
What got you in to playing weddings and events?
A close friend of mine asked me if I would be interested in DJing her wedding. I accepted the job and had a blast. Its a fun atmosphere and a chance to play and listen to music that I normally wouldn’t get the chance to.
How long have you been playing at weddings? What type of music is generally requested?
I have been DJing at various venues (night clubs, events) for 6 or 7 years, but have been focusing on weddings for approximately 1 year.
There have been some unusual requests which vary from Aqua to 50 Cent to Keith Urban, but typically people like the latest pop songs like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga etc. or the old classics such as Michael Jackson or KC and the Sunshine Band.
What do you do to motivate the crowd when the dance floor is empty?
A song that will get people dancing, usually a country song that everyone can sing to but more importantly dance to!
Are you available for travel?
When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences?
I have been DJing since 2006. A group of local DJ’s first inspired me. I would go each weekend and listen to them spin. It didn't take long until I owned my first mixer and started to play with music. My biggest influences are Benny Benassi, Eric Prydz, and DJ AM.
What is your favorite type of music? And how would you explain your style today?
My favorite style of music would have to be house or electronic music, but lately I have been trying to expand my musical horizons and now listen to everything from Funk, Hip Hop, Rock, Dubstep and much more.
What has been your favorite event to play at so far?
I don’t think I have a favourite venue, I like each and every gig I have played and like being able to play all genres of music to different crowd types.
What do you do outside of the music scene?
If I’m not playing or listening to music you can you usually find me in the gym either working as a personal trainer, or putting myself through some kind of a work out.
